Home / Buildings and Structures

Most of the works on this page are studio works. I have started a number en plein aire, although they almost always get finished in the studio. Most of these works, which I've categorized as "structures" where originally begun as landscapes and not situational compositions of structures. Although a few works were intended all along to "be" works of structures, most begin as a focal point for a landscape. When the landscape loses focus to the structure, I finish the work as a structure and therefore classified as such as located here in the "structures" page. Otherwise, I've made notes to reflect as much other information as possible.
These are a small subset of my collections. Check back for additions as I get them digitized.

Church at Harper's Ferry, WV 18 X 24 in., Oil on Canvas This is an oil of a popular sketch I did en plein aire in Harper's Ferry when staying there for a short while in 1997 shortly after coming to Washington DC to work. There was originally a large tree behind the light pole, that obscured most of the church. I simply omitted it.

Cathedral at Bad Hamburg 8 x 10 in., Oil on Canvas This is an oil work of a German watercolor artist who sketched this and died before he painted it. A relative of his copied the sketch and I tranferred it to a canvas and painted this from it. This painting was stolen from a home in Carbondale Illinois in 1998. |

Beavertail Lighthouse 12 x 14 in. Oil on Canvas This is a commission of Beavertail Lighthouse. It's a special place to someone I used to work with. I set the perspective from the water, the one view of it she couldn't see. |

Missouri Locomotive 14 x 20 in., Oil on Canvas This is a rare painting for me, as I generally avoid painting machinery such as locomotives, cars, or the like. I just don't like to paint them. However, I met this fellow, who operated this exact steam locomotive (No. 303) back in the early 1900's and related a wonderful story of his route through Missouri that ended over this bridge. I got pictures from him, which I used to paint this picture, which I gave to him. |
