Home / Gallery / Realism

I think realism is my second largest area. Realism to me is to capture something as it really exists. More than that, I believe it's about capturing something that exists as I experience it, and figuring out how to communicate that to the viewer. I enjoy relating things I see in nature to the audience in a way that enables them to feel what I felt when being there. It's a big challenge to capture a composition in just the right way for a viewer to be in my shoes, and when I can do it, I feel like I'm as successful as I can ever be.

Some of these are featured on other pages, such as "landscapes." Therefore, I've tried to include here some paintings that aren't on the site elsewhere. The good paintings are probably going to be duplicated, so check back for changes, rotations and additions.

Haystack

18 x 36 in., Oil on Canvas

This is also a scene of rural Illinois. I used to live in a trailer park near Little Grassy State Park, and I ran the country roads in the evening. At this point, I used to turn around and head several miles back home. I saw this haystack for months each evening I went for a run. This painting has been very difficult to capture on film appropriately. The image on the left is a good rendering of the picture, but lacks the depth of the true painting.

California Poppies

18 x 24 in. Oil on Canvas
Property of Ellen Engram

This is a rendering of a field of wild yellow poppies in Northern California. I have hiked and mountain climbed there many times, and spring is always my favorite time to go. I mentioned this in college and a woman who worked at the school said that she'd love a picture of them, and so this is it.

Daves Oranges

20 x 30 Oil on Canvas
Property of David Clarke

This is a finished work that is a copy of Kurt Andersen's Still Life With Oranges that started as a bet with a small work, and when David saw it asked for a large version, which I gladly painted for him. This is one of my favorite technical works.
