Home / Landscapes

Most landscapes are studio works. I have started a number en plein aire, although they almost always get finished in the studio. Where some landscapes such as the Church at Harper's Ferry, and the Cathedral at Bad Hamburg really are intended to be landscapes and not situational compositions of structures, it seems that they turn out as the latter. In the end, what drives the category (I've decided) is the end primary focus. When the building or structure ends up being incidental to the setting, I've classified them landscapes, and when it becomes the focus, I've classified them as 'structures." Otherwise, I've made notes to reflect as much other information as possible.

Sunset on the Illinois Plains 11 X 16 in., Oil on Canvas On a trip back home, my wife and I were struck at the beauty of a sunset over the plains of Illinois, between Springfield and Decatur. When I originally did this, it was boring and devoid of features that told me what it was. I added the treeline to define what we're looking at the and the scud on the right horizon to make it deeper. |

Shelby's Farm 12 x 20 in., Oil on Canvas This is an approximate copy of a similar photograph I saw somewhere. I originally intended to set it in the summer, but it was winter when I painted it, and as I worked on it I was reminded of a place I used to hunt with a then girlfriend's father, Shelby. I gave it to him eventually, and named it after him. |
