Home / Ink Pencil and Charcoal
Most of the works on this page are preparatory works for other paintings. I have many paintings that are in process (and may be unfinished for a while) that are here in sketch. Some of these sketches turned out to be more popular than the finished work, such as the first one, Church at Harper's Ferry. I've made notes to reflect as much other information as possible.
These are a small subset of my collections. Check back for additions as I get them digitized.

Church at Harper's Ferry
18 x 28 in. Pencil on Craft Paper
This is the original sketch I did of the Church when at Harper's Ferry. Before I had a chance to put this to canvas in oil, I had a number of people ask about buying a copy of this sketch. When I had it reproduced, there was an error by the printmaker that ended up adding color to the work rather than grayscale shadowing. I actually liked what had happened, and wrote down the settings. After a bit of experimentation (the nice man at the print shop let me run his machine) I had a couple of dozen printed in color and got tremendous results. |

Bocci Ball Court at Little Italy
8 x 12 in. Pencil on Craft Paper
This is a sketch of the bocci ball court in little Italy in Baltimore, MD. I sat in on a game of bocci ball played by the local Italians and could have sworn that I was in Italy. Not a word of English was spoken for hours, and to see the cultural interaction of the people really took me away for that afternoon. The finished work I stopped work on a couple of years ago over indecision about populating it with people. I'll eventually finish it, but I'll likely have to go back to Little Italy first, the linguine was out of this world! |

Helen's Flowers
6 x 11 in. Charcoal on Bond Paper
I do very few still life paintings. In fact, I can barely remember doing more than one or two although I think I've done a half dozen. This one, I did for a co-worker although I didn't actually intend it as a work. What happened was, I started "something" to sharpen several charcoals, and ended up after an hour with this. Whatever... |

Hiroke
8 x 10 in. Drawing Pencil on Kraft Paper
I used to do quite a lot of dinner parties. One run of parties was with a Japanese Cultural Organization. I sketched at many of these, and after a short time, got to doing portraits. That, eventually turned into a competition to see how fast one could "finish" one. This is such a sketch--4 minutes. |
